Printing plates and cutting dies are made once for your job, not once per carton. On a 10,000 run that setup is shared across ten times more units than on a 1,000 run, so each unit carries far less of it.
Size and board type drive material cost, and material is the biggest single line. Dropping from double wall to single wall, or trimming a few centimetres off the box, often saves more than cutting print colours.
